Questions on purchases of Mini LP CDs 16 Years, 4 Months ago Karma: 0
I am new to the site and forum. I had no idea the extent of availability of Mini LP CDs. I am very interested in a number of titles I have seen here and via your links. I have purchased a few titles like the new MoFi releases, some domestic USA Rhino releases and a couple of Japanese imports from Tower (RIP) Records.

The site has a link for "Fakes". How concerned should I be about this? How prevelant is this problem? Should I be focusing purchases on certain sources to ensure credibility of the product? What sources could you recommend to help prevent purchasing fakes?

When purchasing Mini LP CDs are they newly remastered or simply a repackage of an existing version?

Some of the pricing is quite a bit less than I have seen from Japanese imports of Mini LP CDs. Might the low price be a trigger to identify potential fakes?

I appreciate any advice and information you can provide on making the right purchases.

Thanks

Mike

Welcome Mike! You have asked a lot of questions here.....

QUOTE:

There are a lot and more released (and re-released) each week. Unfortunately we do not list everything. That said, we probably have well over 50% of what's available especially in Rock (and the various fussions and progressions). Progressive Rock seems to be very popular in Japan.

Mildly concerned and it is prevelant with a handful of artists. In the "Fakes" section you mentioned (left hand menu has a link) there are some tips on buying from eBay sellers. Fakes from "real" shops have never surfaced to my knowledge.

One of the major eBay sellers is compiling a list (you know who you are if you're reading!!) but none of the contributors to this site are "independently wealthy" as they say so we are all too busy to give it the time we would like.

If you're buying new releases then any Japanese based shop is the safest bet. There are two main Japanese sellers for English speaking consumers and some US based sellers too. The best price is usually from Japanese but some times remaindered stock are dumped on US or UK shops. There is a list shops that sell new releases here in the FAQs.

If you're buying second hand Mini LPs there are also some tips in the FAQs.

(There is also a link on that page to the Yahoo Group that has been around much longer than this site. The group started as "Japanese" but has pretty much become a "mini LPs" group now (which is why this forum is so quiet - also - I want to do more work on the forum so do not push it much.)

QUOTE:

They are rarely specially re-mastered for mini LP release but sometimes (rarely) it coincides (the current Genesis releases are a good example and perhaps no coincidence the first batch of Peter Gabriels did too I think).

The Yahoo Group exists because a bunch of audiophiles got together who bought Japanese CDs. They are still considered the best quality in the world and mini LPs are no exception.

Yes - but price on its own is not the only indicator. If it's cheap on eBay and the seller (or the CD) is located in Russia, Belarus, Finland and those areas of the world then it is pretty well certainly a fake - but not always!!

Cheap Chinese based sales on eBay are not usually fakes.

Check the seller's rating and how long they've been around. Also, if they have good feedback from high volume buyers then you're pretty safe. You get to know people's user IDs (buyers and sellers).

We have thought about creating a register of known good sellers but none of us have the time.

Mini LPs are not cheap and most of us work hard for the money we need to buy them so, alas, we do not have the time to put into this site as much as we would like.

Well I have jumped in with both feet. Prior to locating this site I had purchased three mini LP CD from Tower including Led Zeppelin Houses of the Holy and IV and Bruce Springsteen Nebraska. I have received a few of the new MFSL mini LP CDs and I have appreciated these also.

This holiday weekend I have purchased the following Japanese mini LP CDs:

Jimi Hendrix Electric Ladyland
Santana III
Bob Marley Catch A Fire
Ten Years After A Space In Time

All of the above have been received. I am waiting delivery on the titles below:

Jeff Beck The Jeff Beck Group
Beatles Rubber Soul

So far I am wondering only about the Beatles Rubber Soul as to authenticity.

"Rubber Soul" will most likely be a Russian CD as it has never been released as a Japanese made mini.

Check out this Russian site and see if it's there.

Also, if Electric Ladyland is the nude cover it is also a Russian CD.

Yup. I just got Rubber Soul today. That's it alright. Russian dressing on this one.

From what I understand, all Beatles mini-lp's are fakes - they mostly use the original LP OBI's for the replica OBI - Someone in Russia has been using actual jewel case OBI's for replicas on the Paul McCartney mini-lp issues found on eBay!
Always beware and make sure the seller can tell you if the catalog number is etched onto the inner ring of the CD (TOCP, UICY, etc.) Beatles mini's have not been authentically released in Japan as of yet.

Front cover (main) image of Caroline-2008 : Various Artists : Caroline Records 2009 US Releases
Caroline-2008 : 2008-08-05

In late 2008 Caroline Records in the USA released a number of albums by the following artists: UFO, Jethro Tull, Quicksilver Messenger, Brian Eno, Roxy Music, The Raspberries, Kate Bush, Blondie, The Band, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Van Der Graaf Generator (full list below).

Unlike the suspect Universal releases these are 100% Japanese. The only difference between these and the Japanese (apart from being as much as 50% cheaper) is a sticker on the bar code of the obi.

As at March 2009 most of these are still available at Amazon.

7243 5 51728 2 : 2003-04-22
This Boxset covers the singles of Duran Duran from 1981-1985. 13 discs including all the original B-sides. The packaging is a flip top box with each single in a mini-lp style reproduction of the original artwork from the 7" and 12".

Over the years a number of promotional boxes have been released for "The Who". These have included "Manufacturer", "Disk Union" and "Indeterminate Origin".

Here is a selection...

Front cover (main) image of MHCP-1002 : Santana : Lotus
MHCP-1002 : 2006-06-07

Recorded in early July 1973 this album took nearly a year to make it to streets.

One of the most elaborate record covers ever produced and probably the most elaborate so far to make it to mini LP release. It is nearly impossible to capture the splendour of this on a web site but we shall try...

Front cover (main) image of VICP-63335 : Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM) : The World Became The World
VICP-63335 : 2006-02-22
English language version of the earlier native Italian "L'Isola di niente" on ELP's Manticore label. As with the earlier English rehash of PFM's "Per un amico" the lyrics were for the most part re-written (not translated) by Pete Sinfield of King Crimson.

EMER-BOX1 : 2002-11-21

Front opening promo box and obis from Disk Union came with first five albums in 20 bit K2 : VICP-62114 to VICP-62118
