Editor Comments

Paul Simon received criticism on a number of fronts when this album was released.

The album was recorded in South Africa at the time of a variety of boycotts, including cultural. The United Nations Anti-Apartheid Committee did not object as the album used black South African musicians and offered no support to the South African government.

It was argued by others that the amount paid to these performers was less than would have been paid if the album had been recorded in, say, the US or Europe.

The counter argument to this was that these musicians would not have had the opportunity to participate in an album of this calibre if had been recorded elsewhere.

The latter argument has seen to hold true largely because the album was a major success and certainly Paul's best known solo album.

Bonus tracks are:

  1. Homeless (demo)
  2. Diamonds on the soles of her feet (unreleased version)
  3. All Around the World or The Myth of Fingerprints (early version)
