One way to tell whether a CD was pressed in Japan is to check the IFPI / SID number engraved close to center hole of the CD.

First, check these 2 websites about how SID codes are assigned to CD manufacturers:
http://thenationalcollector.jimdo.com/about-ifpi-codes
http://www.ifpi.org/content/library/sid-code-implementation-guide.pdf

For example, Sony Japan codes start with 45xx, JVC Victor with 40xx, Toshiba EMI with 28xx, etc. (you can download one of the many IFPI code databases from

http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~griffin/sidcodes3.zip
)

Most CD's manufactured after 1994 have these IFPI codes.
